Community Foundation distributes more than $220000 in grants to 53 nonprofit organizations - Herald-Whig
Jan 15, 2019QUINCY -- More than $220,000 was distributed Tuesday to 53 nonprofit organizations that benefit from a fund designated for them at the Community Foundation Serving West Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri. Grants were awarded during an open house at the Community Foundation and come from designated endowment funds. The funds have been established by the organization itself or by donors to provide a permanent source of support for organizations they care about. This year's designated fund grants range from $235 to more than $50,000 and represent a 17 percent increase from 2017 grants. "Year after year, we have been fortunate to announce a new record amount of grants distributed. As the funds grow, so do the distributions -- that's the beauty of endowment," said Community Foundation President and CEO Jill Arnold Blickhan. "Whether a donor or the agency itself established an endowment, it shows a great deal of foresight. The annual distributions help each organization fulfill its mission." Earnings provide an additional source of annual income for the nonprofit organizations. Each year, a portion of each organization's fund growth is distributed through a grant, and a portion is retained in each organization's fund for continued growth. "When a nonprofit establishes an endowment fund for itself, it builds its funding mix, provides donors another avenue to give, and allows the nonprofit to focus on its mission instead of managing investments," Blickhan added. The Community Foundation Serving West Central Illinois & Northeast Missouri builds permanent charitable funds to assist area nonprofits and communities. Its mission, "connecting people who care with causes that matter," is achieved by gathering funds, growing them through investments, then granting to nonprofit organizations, causes or communities that mean the most to its donors. Since 1997, the Community Foundation has made more than $5 million in grants. It serves 12-counties: Adams, Brown, Hancock and Pike in Illinois and Clark, Lewis, M...
